New Films by Miyazaki and Takahata

So by now, I think everyone’s well acquainted with the fact that we are getting two new films, both a Miyazaki film and (surprise:) a new Takahata film! The thing about Miyazaki is, we all appreciate when we learn of a new film, but we almost expect it. With Takahata, it’s more of a surprise, a very welcome surprise! I think a lot of people have come to connect Ghibli Studios with Miyazaki exclusively, but when I think about it, my two favourite Ghibli films, Whisper of the Heart and Grave of the Fireflies, were done by different directors. I’m really looking forward to what will come out of this announcement.

Back on the subject of Miyazaki, his new film is the one that we actually have some information on. It will be called “Gake Ue No Ponyo” (Ponyo on a Cliff), and it looks like it will be a more personal kind of film, something more like “My Neighbor Totoro”, rather then the more grand feel of some of his recent films. I’m definitely anticipating it, but then again, I anticipate everything that comes out of Ghibli.

I’m really looking forward to both of these. Ponyo looks like a welcome shift back to Miyazaki’s more personal, less psychadelic side; Howl’s Moving Castle left a bad taste in my mouth and I hope Miyazaki is able to get back on track.
And while there are no details on the Takahata film, I’m still looking forward to it. His films are always interesting, whether I end up liking them or not. I’m not a big fan of Grave of the Fireflies, but I loved Only Yesterday.
