A lot of anime directors can learn a lot about set up and pacing from this show. So far not a single moment seems rushed or sluggish. I also like this a bit more than Miyazaki's theatrical animation simply because there's more time to flesh out the story and characters. I think the animation is actually quite good, even by today's standards. Its a lot fuller than we're use too in television anime and certainly much more expressive, even if its on a lower frame rate than Ghibli's. While the background art isn't up to Studio Ghibli's highest standards, I still very gorgeous to look at.

Orko,
Sorry for the late response. Thanks for sharing your memories. It would have been wonderful if I could have grown up with Conan - it would have been a cherished memory of mine for sure. Sadly here in Canada when I was growing up, the popular anime were "Dragonball Z" and such. It was only after I came online that I was able to see the true gems.
Glad you liked Mimi o Sumaseba. Beautiful movie.

Hello from Italy...
I discover your blog... i like it very much!! ;)
I'm a fan of Miyazaki but i have found your blog searching a "good" review of Maison Ikkoku (one of my favourite series ever togheter with Conan).
For me Conan is a 5 star.... i was so lucky to have watch it in the first 80's and believe me... it was stunning for the animation... never seen before. Have you an idea of the level of the animation in the manga of 70's and also of 80's???
So the experience of watching an episode and then go out and talk about it with your friends and play trying to be like Conan.... and you "must" wait 24 hour for the next one.... sometimes i have cried when the episode was finished :D
I think that the series on dvd sometimes lose some of the magic.... try to imagine to watch this series when you was 13 years old, with a really good dubbing... this was my case. The same was for Maison Ikkoku that i've seen on tv when i was 19 (the right age to understand the themes). Everytime you must wait for the next one.... You speak about of what will happen in the next one at school, with your friends.... the emotions you live watching alone series like Conan or Maison Ikkoku, became a collective emotion.... wonderful remembers :)

Anyway, sorry for my english, and i'm reading your review of Miyazaki movies (i start to watch Mimi o Sumaseba after reading your review.... BEAUTIFUL... and the next will be Omohide Poropo) i've listened some of you music from Maison Ikkoku (really good)... and thanks again for the really good job!!!
CIAO!!!
