I love them both. They are very different from each other. I think the movie's characters are much more likeable than the book's, and there's a different magic to each. It's my favorite Ghibli film seconded by My Neighbor Totoro (Spirited Away being third). I didn't have trouble following the plot which differed quite significantly from the book after a certain point, so it makes me wonder why people thought it was difficult to understand?
