Taking someone with no experience in animation and making him direct a feature length adaptation of a beloved book series, released under a respected brand like Ghibli is almost irresponsible, and I think Suzuki might have been just a little too excited at the idea of this father-son showdown. It is not that it is that bad, but for me the whole thing story-wise simply doesn't glue together enough, which is my biggest gripe with this movie. Goro should have studied more Hayao's work in this regard, or better he should have been given the possibility to earn more experience with lesser works before doing a feature length film. The soundtrack is really good IMO, quite a bit above average, for me as a non musician. There is also a piano album of the music.
