If you don't want to put in the time with the anime, maybe you could look at the manga? While it does have elements of the typical shounen action anime, it also has very strong character development, and addresses issues such as sin, repentance, forgiveness, revenge, redemption, and damnation. I'm only surviving on back manga's I haven't read before. You could always give in to temptation and read the rest of the cross game manga. (Yes I know I am evil), and if you haven't caught up with the Oofuri manga you really should, it's getting pretty regular releases now too.
