Tokyo Magnitude 9 – Yuuki?
There’s been a reasonable amount of controversy on the Animesuki board, as well as Japanese blogs, about the eighth episode of Tokyo Magnitude. When noticing some not-so-subtle clues, it seems as if Yuuki didn’t make it through his surgery, and Mirai has…er…gone insane and thinks he’s alive and talking to her. There was debate on the Animesuki boards over whether this sudden plunge into trope territory was a bad idea. I’m inclined to think it was, and kind of clashes with the tone of the show up until now.
Anyways, it seems like the writers decided that giving us an answer was too easy and instead gave us an episode that continues with some cryptic clues. For one thing, Mirai is still the only one that interacts with Yuuki in any way. She’s still the only one that holds his backpack as well. At the end, where we see him holding his own:
Except at the end, it turns out his bag was abandoned at the hospital. Mari picks it up and runs after them.
I think that pretty much seals it….Unless you think there are two clones of Yuuki’s backpack, then this is clearly implied to be Mirai’s delusion of Yuuki wearing his backpack, while in reality abandoning it. To those of you who wanted Yuuki to survive the show, I don’t think it will happen. To those of you who disliked the change in tone and realism to accomodate this kind of “massive delusion” storytelling, well, you won’t like this episode either.

another thing that I found when I watched this on Youtube was the fact that Yuuki himself was always trying to get her attention so he can say something (which he finally does at the end), so I assume it will be something like “its enough already” or “its ok”.
It seems that they are trying for a more subtle emotional twist with is or isn’t he dead in these last two episodes. At this point the show seems to be getting even better. Now to see what the last two episodes bring in the way of conclusion. The next episode may possibly be Mirai’s finally coming to terms with Yuki’s death.
I don’t know if I’d call it “subtle”. The clues are all pretty obvious, unfortunately the realism of the show kind of had to be thrown away to do it.
i feel mindfucked
