Ookiku Furikabutte – First Impressions

If you had told me one month ago that I would have watched four anime involving baseball within the span of a month, I would have called you insane.  I’ve always thought that I could never be interested in sports anime.  Even when I started watching Cross Game, I thought to myself that the draw of the show was really the non-sports elements.  And although its true that the slice-of-life moments are wonderful, I soon realized that I actually did enjoy the baseball scenes a lot.  Maybe I had overlooked the potential in using sports and competition as a device just like any other for dramatic purposes as well as character building.  Around the time I finished Touch, I was reccomended to watch this anime, which appeared to be getting quite a bit of praise as a high quality story.

My first impression is that it has all the ingredients to be successful – likable characters, an enjoyable atmosphere and tone to the character interactions, and setting up the potential for great moments of character-building further on.  With that being said, while I think Cross Game and Touch are anime that can be enjoyed even if you don’t like baseball, Ookiku Furikabutte seems to revolve a bit more heavily around the dynamics of playing baseball.  So if you find the sport utterly boring, I think that watching the two series I mentioned above as a transition first would be a better idea.

Oofuri is lovee! The whole baseball dynamics in Oofuri is amazing, makes you see how much the author researched before making this series. And then there’s another hook to this: the BL-ness, which makes it quite an ‘exciting’ series for fangirls, for the wrong(?) reasons lol.

I don’t know what BL means, but I finished the series after two days (its so addictive) and I think its really the best depiction of baseball I’ve ever seen.
